Genetic Testing
With a large portion of dogs in the general population carrying one or more genetic disorders, we believe that important to test for genetic health so we breed pups those parents are free of these diseases, so therefore unable to pass them on to the pups.
DNA testing involves taking a swab from inside the mouth, by gently rubbing a swab, so is not invasive.
There are various levels of tests available. For pups to be unaffected by any of these diseases, the parents must not be affected by the disease, or each be a carrier for that disease.
While the list of diseases we test for is very comprehensive, it is still crucial to take great care of your dog throughout its life. An excellent diet, exercise, veterinary care, and a warm, loving home goes hand in hand with DNA disease testing and early puppy care and training to ensuring a long and healthy life for your best friend.
Hip and Elbow
We hip and elbow score our males, and females have their hips and elbows checked by the vet. Although hip and elbow conformation is partially heritable, it is considered multi-genetic, so cannot be tested for genetically. It’s cause is about 30% genetic and 70% environmental. It is important that you do not walk a young puppy for longer distances than they would happily go themselves, and that stairs are closed off to puppy while young. It is also a good idea to avoid frisbee and high catches, as there is a risk that dogs will land badly and injure joints.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree generally, and our aim is to breed dogs who will be healthy and functional for a very long time, so it is important that our parents are also healthy with good conformation and temperaments.
Temperament
Labradoodles are intelligent dogs who love being part of their families. As with all dogs, you will get out what you put in with quality training and consistency. We select for intelligent dogs who are active enough to go for a good run with you and wear the children out playing, but who can learn to be wonderful inside family companions.
